Narayan Debnath, a cartoonist from Kolkata, passed away early Tuesday morning at a private hospital. He was 98 years old. Debnath was given the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2021, for his contributions to the country. While he was having treatment, a West Bengal minister presented him with the honour, which he accepted last week. Previously, he received the Bangabibhsuan Award in 2013 as well as the Sahitya Academy Award.

Debnath is most known for immortalising comedic characters such as Handa Bhonda, Batul the Great, and Nonte Fonte in his paintings.

“He was brought to the hospital on December 24 with renal and lung difficulties,” said Tapas Debnath, Narayan Debnath’s son. “He was admitted to the hospital with kidney and lung problems.” In addition to his wife, Narayan Debnath leaves behind two boys and a daughter.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has claimed that his death has left an irreparable vacuum in the realm of cartoons and animation. Narayan Debnath, a prominent cartoonist, died recently, Banerjee said in a statement. “I am truly grieved by his passing,” Banerjee added.

In a statement, Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal legislature, stated that Narayan Debnath’s legacy will be treasured forever. It has been reported that legendary cartoonist Narayan Debnath has died. He was the creator of timeless fictitious characters such as “Batul the Great,” “Handa Bhonda,” and “Nantes Fante.” His legacy will be valued for generations to come by both youngsters and adults.
