Recalls for vehicle failures or defects continue. This time General Motors (GM) is recalling 410,019 2015 and 2016 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups for possible airbag failure.
This recall is because the roof rail airbag modules on certain trucks could fail catastrophically.
According to the folks at the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), the end cap of the air bag inflator may come off the inflator or the side wall of the inflator may break off.
Affected vehicles include the 2015 and 2016 Chevrolet pickups and GMC 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups, but the recall does not cover all trucks produced in that period. That’s why it’s best to head over to the NHTSA website and enter your vehicle’s VIN to see if it’s one of the affected models.
Currently no accidents are attributed to this recall and there is no warning to stop driving the trucks, but this problem can be very dangerous if it happens while driving.
In fact, all three reported cases occurred without passengers inside the cabin.
According to NHTSA, a separation end cap or inflator rupture could cause compressed gas to escape and send air pockets or interior components into the vehicle. Obviously this could result in an accident
The folks at GMC and Chevrolet will take care of replacing the affected roof rail airbag modules at no cost.
GM will notify customers on August 16, 2021 and inform them of the dangers of defective airbags, it will also notify owners when repair is available.
