The invasion of Russia against Ukraine has been adding its sixth day of attacks. Given this situation, the authorities of the invaded country indicated that they received thousands of requests from foreign volunteers to join their militia. These would form the ” International Legion ” announced by President Volodímir Zelenski last Sunday, February 27.
“We have already received thousands of requests from foreigners who want to join the resistance to the Russian occupiers and protect the security of the world from the regime of ( Russian President Vladimir) Putin,” Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Mailar said on Twitter.
Zelensky noted that anyone who wants to join “the defense of security in Europe and the world” can come to Ukraine and fight “side by side with the Ukrainians against the invaders of the 21st century.” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dymtro Kuleba explained that the volunteers should contact the Ukrainian diplomatic missions in their respective countries.
The Kyiv Independent newspaper recalled that the current Ukrainian law allows foreigners between 18 and 40 years of age to apply for positions as soldiers in their armed forces. These volunteer combatants must prove to be physically and mentally fit for battle, in addition to not having a criminal record.
This local media reported that some foreigners have already served in the Ukrainian military lines in the Donbas region. UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss stated that her country will help British citizens who decide to join Ukraine’s military ranks.
“Of course, if people want to support that fight, I would support them in it,” Truss told the BBC. “That is something that people can decide for themselves,” added the diplomat, stressing that the war has continental repercussions. “The Ukrainian people are fighting for the freedom and democracy, not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe”, he sentenced.
After the Russian attack, which began on February 24 by order of Vladimir Putin, thousands of people have fled the conflict zone. A total of 660,000 people have left their homes to cross the borders, according to information from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Most of the Ukrainians fleeing the war are heading to Poland, which will have about 300,000 refugees, as planned by the end of the day at least. More than 90,000 arrived in Hungary, 40,000 in Moldova, 30,000 in Slovakia and some 34,000 travelled to Romania. Also, some 50,000 inhabitants are in other countries and a “considerable number” from eastern Ukraine decided to come to Russia, reported the UNHCR.
To the list of civilians who joined to fight in the war between Russia and Ukraine, the still active boxers Oleksandr Usyk and Vasyl Lomachenko shared various snapshots of their support in the war conflict.
“The Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Territorial Defense Battalion has been formed and armed. In the territorial defense stands the boxer Vasily Lomachenko,” shared Lomus, the name of the boxer’s brand. In the said publication, you can see the athlete carrying a weapon and dressed in military uniform.
Meanwhile, his colleague Oleksandr Usyk, who is also a heavyweight champion and winner of the London 2012 gold medal, decided to defend his homeland.
