Gastric Sleeve: How do I know if it’s for me?

The gastric sleeve treatment is the most used in weight reduction operations . This technique consists of the withdrawal of a part of the stomach, which reduces the feeling of hunger thanks to the fact that the patient feels satiated with less food. The main advantage of this method is that it is a not very aggressive technique that offers great results with little discomfort and a bearable postoperative period for the patient.

But how do you know if gastric sleeve is for you? If you are thinking about reducing weight, you should read these tips, since not all treatments are suitable for all people.

Which patients can undergo gastric sleeve treatment?

In the first place, it should be noted that gastric sleeve is an irreversible treatment and, therefore, it is only advisable to perform it if, after having tried exercise, diet and medication, the patient has not managed to reduce their weight problems.

Gastric sleeve is a recommended treatment for patients who have moderate obesity, that is, obesity that ranges from 35 to 40 on Body Mass Index (BMI) . For patients with morbid obesity, gastric sleeve treatment may be a step prior to gastric ByPass.

On the other hand, it is important to emphasize that the client must be responsible in order to undertake gastric sleeve treatment, as it requires a series of habits and diets before the operation, and represents a great change in eating routines after surgery .

Who cannot have a gastric sleeve operation

Weight reduction treatment by gastric sleeve is totally contraindicated for pregnant women and for all those women who have been mothers and are still breastfeeding their babies. Similarly, clients with cardiovascular problems, eating problems or psychological disorders would also be excluded from gastric sleeve treatment.

The main reason for excluding people with psychological disorders is that the postoperative requires a high degree of commitment, and not all people are mentally prepared to assume it. Likewise, the patient will have to adapt to new eating habits after the operation.

In the cases of a patient with eating problems, the possible treatment would be studied with a psychologist who will be the one who, finally, advises whether or not to perform the weight reduction intervention through gastric sleeve.
