Everything you didn’t know about hyaluronic acid

What is hyaluronic acid?

It is a protein that is found naturally in our body. Especially on the skin called the dermis. But also in other places such as cartilage, joints and muscle fibers. Being within our tissues, it does not generate rejection and does not require allergy tests prior to administration.

Hyaluronic acid has a great capacity to retain water, giving the skin moisture and firmness.

All hyaluronic acids have the property of being resorbable, viscoelastic, biocompatible and non-immunogenic.

As we age, we lose the ability to produce hyaluronic acid, in such a way that the skin does not retain water as efficiently as in youth. Consequently there will be a loss of volume of the skin and the appearance of wrinkles.

There are 2 types of hyaluronic acid depending on the desired results:

1. Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid
2. Cross-linked hyaluronic acid

Crosslinking refers to the degree of crosslinking that hyaluronic acid molecules have, which allows total customization of treatments, depending on how we want to hydrate, soften or give more or less lasting volumes to some facial areas. We will explain it later.

NON-CROSSLINK HYALURONIC ACID CROSSLINK HYALURONIC ACID

1. Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid

Its structure is linear. It is distributed freely, without being attached to each other. It is less dense than cross-linked hyaluronic acid and is applied in superficial planes of the skin.

It can be applied in isolation or in combination with vitamins and antioxidants.

It is indicated for:

• Correct fine wrinkles
• Moisturize and revitalize the skin
• Correct dark circles
• Improve skin turgor and elasticity
• Stimulate the production of collagen and elastin

• 2. Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid

This type of hyaluronic acid has a three-dimensional mesh shape that allows the creation of support structures and volumes.

Its application is in deep planes of the skin.

It is indicated for:

• Fill deep furrows and wrinkles (nasolabial fold, marionette lines)
• Correct volume in cheekbones
• Volumize and contour lips
• Correct defects in the nose
• Profiling the angle of the jaw and chin.

How long does the effect of hyaluronic acid last?

Depending on the type of hyaluronic acid used, the effects last around 6 to 12 months.

 

Is there an antidote, in case I don’t like the result?

Yes, the effects can be reversed in the consultation through the administration of hyaluronidase, which is an enzyme that degrades hyaluronic acid. This substance gives us one more tool to optimize the results of the treatment and increase the safety of this product.

How do we apply hyaluronic acid in our practice?

Treatment is done by a fine needle injection. We can use anesthetic through: creams, local cold or infiltrated anesthesia to reduce discomfort.
