After evaluating the statistics of some of the biggest names in music, including the number of monthly listeners on the streaming platform, the group conferred the new title on the pop icon.
The Weeknd has 111.4 million streaming followers as of March 20, 2023, making him the first artist ever to achieve 100 million monthly Spotify listeners.
Miley Cyrus comes in second with 82.4 million. Shakira comes in second with 81.6 million monthly listeners, followed by Ariana Grande (80.6 million), Taylor Swift (80.2 million), Rihanna (78.5 million), and Ed Sheeran (77.5 million).
In addition to his success on Spotify, The Weeknd recently won four Juno Awards in Canada, including artist of the year, composer of the year for a record fourth time, single of the year for a third time, and pop album of the year.
He is now the second-most-awarded artist in the awards’ history, trailing only Anne Murray (25 wins).
The Weeknd has lately broken more records. He released his “Die For You” remix with Ariana Grande, which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it The Weeknd and Grande’s sixth number one single.
He also released his debut live album, Live At SoFi Stadium, which documents the second of two shows he performed at the Los Angeles venue last year and acts as an audio companion to the concert film of the same name.
Considering these tremendous accomplishments, The Weeknd has been declared “the most popular artist on the planet.” Guinness World Records named him the most popular artist in the world for his two most recent records, and no one comes close.
