Shawn Mendes postpones tour until further notice due to mental health issues

Shawn Mendes is taking a break from his music career to take care of his mental health. The ‘Treat You Better’ interpreter shared the unfortunate news through his Instagram account, assuring that he would postpone the shows of his ‘Wonder’ world tour.

“It breaks my heart to have to say this, but unfortunately I will have to postpone the next three weeks of shows in Uncasville, CT until further notice,” the 23-year-old musician wrote.

He added: “I’ve been on the road since I was 15 and to be honest it’s always been hard being on the road away from friends and family. After a few years off the road I felt like I was ready to get back on the road. to dive in, but that decision was premature and unfortunately the toll of the road and the pressure have caught up with me and I have reached a breaking point.

The singer explained that he made the decision after talking to some professionals about his health. “I need to take some time to heal and take care of myself and my mental health first and foremost. As soon as I know what I’m going to do, I promise I’ll tell you, I love you.”

Mendes recently opened up to his social media followers about his mental health struggles. In April, he shared a lengthy note on Twitter about feeling “flying or drowning” at any given moment, questioning whether that’s what it feels like in your 20s.

“The truth is that even with so much success, it’s hard for me to feel that I’m not failing, hyper-focused on what I don’t have, forgetting to see everything I do. The truth is that I’m overwhelmed and overstimulated.”

The Grammy Award nominee has previously spoken out about dealing with mental health challenges. In 2018, he told Apple Music host Zane Lowe that his song ‘In My Blood’ was about learning to deal with anxiety.

“It was something that hit me in the last year. Before that, growing up, I was a pretty calm kid, super stable. I knew people who had suffered from anxiety and I had a hard time understanding it, but then when it hit me, I thought: ‘God man, what is this? This is crazy.’ That song is a complete truth and best of all, it’s not all negative. The whole reason I wrote this song was to formulate a little bit of hope.”

In his 2020 Netflix documentary ‘Shawn Mendes: In Wonder’, the artist also revealed that he constantly finds it challenging to be away from his family and friends in his native Canada.

“I’ve never had so much fun in my life, but I also want to spend time with my parents and watch movies, drive through a suburb, lie on a football field, smoke a joint and look at the stars with my friends and eat some jerky. Really small-town thoughts. I think I miss that right now.”
