The singer and actress, who co-starred on the hit Disney Channel comedy with Jennifer Stone and David Henrie, said she “felt secure” with the ensemble and was “ashamed” of prior actions.
Selena Gomez is opening up about her biggest regrets since appearing as Alex Russo on the Disney Channel sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place, which launched her career.
On Monday’s episode of the Wizards of Waverly Pod with Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise, the singer admitted that her biggest mistake so far has been “not staying in touch” with her series co-stars.
“I felt ashamed of my decisions,” the Only Murders in the Building star confessed. “I didn’t want you guys to see me in that situation because a) you would have told me the truth, which frightens me, and b) I didn’t want to let you down.”
From 2007 until 2012, Gomez co-starred in the hit program with Stone (Harper Finkle), DeLuise (Jerry Russo), David Henrie (Justin Russo), Jake T. Austin (Max Russo), and Maria Canals-Barrera (Theresa Russo).
“That’s really beautiful, and thank you for saying that,” DeLuise said in response to Gomez’s sensitivity. Obviously, we… I miss you and am relieved that you are doing well now.”
Stone also acknowledged that she felt she played a role in their friendship’s demise. “I appreciate you saying that as well,” Stone added.
“To be totally honest, there have been occasions when I’ve wondered, ‘Did we quit being friends because I didn’t tell her what she wanted to hear?’ you know what I mean… so I value your presence.”
“I appreciate you… sincerely, and I love you as I’ve never loved anybody else,” Gomez concluded.
After the show ended, Gomez launched a successful singing career and appeared in films and television shows such as Spring Breakers, Getaway, and, most recently, Only Murders in the Building.
She has been vocal about her mental health issues in the industry over the years, and she even created a documentary last year, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, which details her mental health journey.
During her time on Wizards of Waverly Place, the actress stated that she “felt comfortable, which is a really hard thing for me to feel, and I know that you guys adore me for who I am.” You guys truly cared about me, and it was all I could have asked for. “I miss our unwavering trust and bond so much.”
