Because ” The Danish Girl ” by Tom Hooper (“The King’s Speech”) is the film adaptation of Elbe’s life – based on a novel by David Ebershoff. In it he tells how Elbe, who grew up as Einar Wegener (played by Eddie Redmayne in the film adaptation), gradually discovered her feminine side and went down in history as one of the first people to have gender reassignment surgeries performed.
Unfortunately, “The Danish Girl” is currently not available in a streaming subscription. You can still watch the drama for cheap. At Amazon Prime Video, for example, it can currently be bought for just €3.98.
“Fantastic Beasts” star Eddie Redmayne was nominated for an Oscar for the leading role in “The Danish Girl” – as was the costume and production design of the film, which is not only visually impressive. The production even managed to win an Oscar – it went to supporting actress Alicia Vikander . She plays the portrait painter Gerda, who is married to Einar Wegener.
We can also recommend this drama, which has a top-class cast in other roles with, among others, Ben Whishaw, Amber Heard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Emerald Fennell and Sebastian Koch. The official FILMSTARTS review gives it a good 3.5 stars. Our conclusion: “With a lot of feeling, Oscar winner Tom Hooper tells the story of a historically proven gender reassignment in “The Danish Girl” and turns it into an intense marital drama that is particularly impressive in terms of acting.”
