LISA LING THE VIEW

Ling began her television career when she was cast as one of four hosts for Scratch, a Sacramento-based teen magazine show. At 18, she joined Channel One News as one of their youngest correspondents and hosts. Her roles included war reporters, including assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On August 2, 1999, she joined The View after beating out 12,000 hopefuls who auditioned to supplant Debbie Matenopoulos but who left the show after three and a half years in late 2002 to return to the international news.

Ling accepted an offer to host National Geographic Ultimate Explorer. In 2005, the show moved to the National Geographic Channel and reverted to its original name, National Geographic Explorer.

Ling covered up the drug war in Colombia, studied the infamous MS-13 gang, and investigated US prison culture. Likewise, she was allowed to travel to North Korea as part of a medical missionary team, where she and a film group were able to document a rare glimpse into North Korea.

She then became a special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show which highlighted a large number of Ling’s investigative pieces, including a report on North Korea.

Ling also reported a bride burning in India, the assault in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda, child trafficking in Ghana, the covert investigation of Pennsylvania puppy mills with Main Line Animal Rescue, immediately following the hurricane in New Orleans and the April 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.

In December 2008, CNN’s award-winning documentary Planet in Peril included Ling in the second instalment of the series, called ‘Battlelines’. She was a correspondent who covered over-fishing for sharks in Costa Rica, elephant poaching in Chad, and gave people an in-depth look at the battle for oil control in Nigeria.

In 2010 Ling helped create the SecretSocietyOfWomen.com website, a discussion for women where they can share their problems anonymously.
