‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Almost Took The Na’vi To Outer Space

Even though the new “Avatar” sequel will take place on the ocean, screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have revealed that a massive space battle was almost a part of the plot. Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel, took viewers on a journey beyond Pandora’s rainforests and into the depths of the planet’s beautiful oceans. Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that an early script included a key scene of the Na’vi going into outer space.

Jaffa revealed that the film’s original script considered including a space battle between humans and the Na’vi. “That concept was widely discussed and it clearly resonated with people. However, we were having a hard time. How does that fit into the narrative we’re presenting? When asked when he could get back to them, Jim replied, “Well, give me a few weeks.” He secluded himself and composed an entire screenplay. To add, it has a fantastic script.”

Even though it’s a fascinating idea, it could have been smart to confine the story to the oceans of Pandora to keep with the series’ established themes of wildlife and nature preservation. Avatar: The High Ground, a three-volume run from Dark Horse Comics, takes place during the war between the Na’vi and the RDA after the company’s vengeful return to Pandora, but the idea of Na’vi going into outer space was ultimately scrapped.

The writers also disclosed that Cameron oversaw the development of the scripts for the upcoming sequels in a writer’s room. The plan, according to Silver, was to spend six months in a writers’ room and “break down beat by beat” three movies that would describe a larger saga, but that would still be distinct from one another. Over the course of scripting more installments, the franchise’s scope expanded.

Screenwriters said the second film’s script grew so long that it had to be divided in two. “The problem was how to make everything work by the end of the film without making it feel rushed or disjointed. That’s how the original version of our film split in half “Said Silver.

The third installment of the Avatar franchise will hit theaters on December 20, 2024, two years after the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which is currently in post-production. Previous reports have indicated that Lo’ak, the second son of Jake and Neytiri, will play a more central role in the film, and that a new Na’vi tribe called the Ash People will be featured. When Avatar 3 opens in theaters, there will already be two more sequels in production. Now that Avatar has become a successful franchise, viewers are curious to see what else Cameron has planned for the planet Pandora.
