‘Andrea’: Bad Bunny’s song that would be inspired by a femicide that shocked Puerto Rico

‘Andrea’ is part of Bad Bunny’s latest album and has a harsh meaning

Bad Bunny released his album ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’ on May 6, with a total of 23 songs that quickly positioned themselves among the first places of reproduction on the main music platforms.

One song, in particular, caught the attention of fans for its profound lyrics and important message. ‘Andrea’ is the 19th song on the album, in which the Buscabulla duo participates, and would be inspired by a tragic story of femicide that shocked Puerto Rico.

Andrea Ruiz was murdered on April 27, 2021, by her partner Miguel Ocasio, who constantly harassed and threatened her. Andrea, 35, denounced the violence by Ocasio, but the authorities denied her protection order. The man murdered her shortly after her.

This case outraged the country due to the State’s indifference and lack of protection in cases of violence against women.

Bad Bunny, originally from Puerto Rico, took the name of the victim as a reference to express in the lyrics of the song the different forms of violence that women experience daily.

The song ‘Andrea’ does not narrate how Andrea Ruiz’s death occurred, but instead describes an independent and empowered woman who longs for a less sexist society. The song calls for respect for women.

“She doesn’t want a flower, she just wants it to not wither. That when she buys bread, they don’t ask for it. Don’t ask her what she did yesterday and invite her to a beautiful future. Give her respect and never take it away, ”she says in one of the most forceful parts of the song.

Although “El Conejo Malo” has not confirmed the hypothesis, media such as Pictoline and Internet users related the song’s lyrics to what happened to Andrea Ruíz.

Even the sister of the victim Alexandra Ruiz thanked the singer for using her sister’s name to talk about such an important issue as gender violence.

“It was something that surprised us. It is a great honor to have the name of Andrea, but I know that it goes beyond my sister’s case. Bad Bunny dedicates it to all those women who are going through a situation of this type, “ the victim’s sister confessed in an interview with journalist Elián Zidán, on Noticias Univisión 24/7.

The victim’s sister affirms that the issue of gender violence is very serious and it is important to raise awareness about this terrible situation.

“Bad Bunny, I am very grateful that you are using your media to bring to light this social problem that is affecting all of Latin America. You are very brave to be a man and to use your platform for this, ”he concluded.
