Canadian Brooke Henderson crowned champion of the ShopRite Classic

As Lindsey Weaver-Wright wrapped up her round at the ShopRite Classic on the LPGA Tour, Canadian Brooke M. Henderson was ready.

Canadian knew there was a possibility of overtime. Weaver-Wright birdied the hole and forced overtime.

Henderson had made the most of her time waiting for Weaver-Wright and had prepared herself.

“The wait was a bit long, which complicates things,” explained Henderson. I just tried to eat a lot to have energy, then I went to the locker room and thought for a bit. I was just grateful to have the opportunity to return to the field. »

Henderson’s preparation paid off when she scored an eagle in overtime – again on the par -5 18th  hole at Seaview Bay, Galloway, New Jersey – and she captured the 11th title in her career in the LPGA. She was already the winningest professional golfer in Canadian history, but her latest victory added to her ongoing legacy.

Henderson started the day on the ninth hole, a few shots behind Sweden’s Frida Kinhult, who led the tournament after two rounds. Kinhult, however, played 75 (plus-4) to tumble in the standings.

Meanwhile, Henderson had three birdies and an eagle on her front nine and she added two birdies on the back nine to put up a 64.

“Before starting the day, if they had told me that I would be in overtime to try to win, I would have been very happy,” said Henderson. I just tried to keep that mindset. In overtime, you only have one chance so you have to give it your all and go win. I just tried to hit some good shots and I was able to score an eagle, which is great fun. »

Weaver-Wright, who finished her round after Henderson, birdied her final two holes to tie the Canadian with a minus-12 overall.

Henderson won the prize pool of US$262,500 and recorded her first win since the Los Angeles Open in 2021.

North of the border, Henderson’s victory echoed the PGA Canadian Open, played at St. George’s Golf Club in Toronto.

Ontario’s Corey Conners, who was the top-ranked Canadian, was thrilled to hear the news.

“I am blown away. She is incredibly talented. From all Canadians, congratulations Brooke, that’s really special,” said Conners, who was Henderson’s teammate on the Canadian Olympic team at the 2021 Tokyo Games. LPGA is so amazing and I’m sure she’s far from done with it.”

England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff concluded her tournament with an eagle and finished alone in third place. The 34-year-old, who has yet to claim a victory on the circuit, found herself one stroke behind the leaders.

The fourth player in the world, the New Zealander Lydia Ko, shared the fourth position with the Swiss Albane Valenzuela.
