At Least Five People Shot, Unexploded Ordnance Found At New York Train Station

According to firefighters, unexploded explosive devices were also found. Police are looking for a man wearing a gas mask and an orange vest.

Law enforcement sources say five people were shot at a subway station in Brooklyn, New York. Fire personnel responding to reports of smoke Tuesday morning at the 36th Street Station in Sunset Park found multiple people with gunshots and unexploded devices.

The fire department said 13 people were injured but did not provide details. A photo from the scene showed people tending to bloodied passengers lying on the floor of the station.

According to multiple law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation, preliminary information indicated that a suspect was wearing a construction vest and gas mask. Further details were not immediately available. The trains were delayed.

Weapon recovered at subway station

After hours of exhaustive search, New York authorities reported to CNN the discovery of a weapon, which was found at the station in which ten people were shot.

The suspect in the shooting remains at large, authorities say.

Information is still limited.

In the same way, the authorities recognized that there is still very little information in this regard, since the suspect is still on the loose and the reasons for which he attacked are unknown, the same reason for which a call is made to all New Yorkers to be “cautious” and Report any suspicious activity they detect.

The shooter posed as a subway worker

Janno Lieber, CEO of the “Metropolitan Transportation Authority” (MTA, for its acronym in English) also announced through the press conference that the shooter posed as a worker of the corporation responsible for collective transportation in New York.

Current status of the victims

The number of victims remains at 16. Of these people, 10 have gunshot wounds: 5 are in critical condition, while the rest are stable. The remaining six people were treated for inhaling smoke from the gas bomb thrown by the shooter before firing.

Likewise, Keechant Sewell, commissioner of the New York Police Department, announced that the possibility of a terrorist attack has already been ruled out, so the case is not being treated as such. On her side, Governor Kathy Hochul called for a stop to the violence: “It has to end now.”

Through the press conference, authorities confirmed that the suspect detonated a gas bomb before firing multiple shots. As had already been disclosed, the authorities are looking for a 1.65-meter, 80-kilogram black man, who was wearing an orange construction vest, a gas mask and carrying a school bag.

The NYPD is inspecting “all stations and trains” while searching for the person responsible. That is why the nearby schools have direct closure orders and numerous ambulances and police units are concentrated, including specialized bomb brigades.
