United States: Trump will agree to reduce the number of refugees with Congress

The US government announced on Monday the reduction of one third – from 45 thousand to 30 thousand – of the quota for refugees for the next fiscal year 2019.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, still has to agree with the Congress the reduction of 45 thousand to 30 thousand of the quota of refugees for the next fiscal year announced Monday by Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.

This was admitted on Tuesday by the spokeswoman of Pompeo, Heather Nauert, who added that the figure announced by the Secretary of State “may not be the final.”

“This is just a proposal that the Government moved to Congress, the Government should now consult Congress, after these consultations, the president will make a decision,” Nauert explained.

Some Senate Democrats have already advanced that they will pressure the Executive to increase the quota.

Pompeo announced on Monday the reduction of a third – from 45 thousand to 30 thousand – of the quota for refugees for the next fiscal year 2019.

This would be Trump’s second drastic reduction of appropriations, which upon assuming power reduced to the current 45 thousand the 110 thousand that former President Barack Obama (2009-2017) authorized at the end of his term.

During the 2016 election campaign, Trump criticized Obama’s policy towards refugees and considered that some could actually be terrorists.

It also temporarily banned the entry into the country of the vast majority of the world’s refugees for 120 days, within its controversial migration veto.
