UN passes resolution calling on Russia to stop war in Ukraine

With 141 votes in favor, 5 against and 35 abstentions, the UN General Assembly approved the resolution that “deplores” in “the strongest terms” Russia’s aggression against Ukraine

The General Assembly of the United Nations ( UN ) passes a resolution to demand that Russia stop the war in Ukraine and withdraw all its troops.

With 141 votes in favor, 5 against and 35 abstentions, the resolution was approved.

Mexico voted in favor of the resolution, as announced by Ambassador Juan Ramón de la Fuente. He pointed out that “it contains many of the arguments that we have put forward in various forums in relation to the issue and also includes a clause that we have proposed to leave open the door of diplomacy through which the solution to the conflict will finally have to come.”

Thus, more than 70% of countries joined the claim against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.

The five countries that voted against were Russia, Eritrea, Belarus, North Korea and Syria. China opted for abstention.

The 16-point resolution “condemns in the strongest terms the aggression committed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”

It also “demands that the Russian Federation immediately end the use of force against Ukraine.”

At the same time, it condemns “all violations of international humanitarian law and violations and abuses of human rights”

The document “urges the immediate peaceful resolution of the conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine through political dialogue, negotiations, mediation and other peaceful means.”
