The plan to offer cheaper monthly public transportation passes in Germany is taking shape. According to a new report, the tickets will be available on June 1 and will be valid throughout the country.
The 9-euro ticket appears to be a more appealing offer than previously thought. According to various reports in German media, the federal government intends to make monthly passes available for three months beginning June 1 – just in time for the summer vacation.
In addition, contrary to popular belief, the RND has reported that the 9-euro ticket will be valid on regional transportation throughout Germany. The transport committee of the Bundestag apparently decided that regionally limited tickets would be inconvenient.
“The 9-euro ticket must be valid throughout the country,” SPD traffic expert Martin Kröber told the RND. “Otherwise, commuters who cross federal state and transportation association borders will be disadvantaged.” Due to the necessary legislative processes, he added that June 1 was the earliest possible date for the offer to begin.
The Bundestag is expected to vote on a draught law allowing for discounted public transportation tickets on May 18 or 19, with the Bundesrat following suit on May 20. Tickets will be available for purchase via the internet, the Deutsche Bahn app, and service centers in stations, but not likely through ticket machines.
The transportation committee has also stated that people who already have a monthly pass will be unaffected by the new offer. Season ticket holders should be given a credit or a refund for the difference in price between their subscription and the 9-euro ticket, according to the RND. It is up to the transportation companies to determine how this will be paid out.
People studying in Germany who have a semester ticket will also benefit, most likely in the form of a three-month refund.
