Russian invasion left more than 1.36 million Ukrainian refugees

The United Nations Organization (UN) reported this Saturday, March 5, that the Russian invasion in Europe left more than 1.36 million Ukrainians displaced since the beginning of the armed actions, on February 24. Poland, bordering Ukraine, is the country that received the most refugees.

According to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 1,368,864 have fled the war in Ukraine to neighbouring countries since Vladimir Putin ordered the military offensive. The UN expects the flow of people to increase, as Russian forces appear to be concentrating their attacks on large Ukrainian cities.

The information shown by the UN was compiled from different sources. “Although everything possible has been done to guarantee the verification of all the statistical information, the figures of some arrivals represent an estimate,” they specify on their website. Between February 18 and 23, 96,000 people moved to Russia from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Poland received more refugees from Ukraine

Some 756,303 refugees from Ukraine have arrived in Poland since February 24, the UNHCR reported. On the other hand, according to the Polish border guards, the number of refugees would be 787,300 people until Friday, March 4.

1.5 million Ukrainians already lived in Poland before the Russian attack. People organize on social media to raise money and medicine while offering free housing, food, jobs or transportation to refugees. Most of the displaced are women and children.
