EU ambassadors did not approve the fifth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, the discussion will continue on Thursday

EU ambassadors at a meeting on Wednesday failed to approve the decision on the fifth package of sanctions against Russia, proposed by the European Commission on Tuesday.

This is reported by Ceske Noviny with reference to diplomatic sources, written ” European Truth “.

Some countries called for clarification of the details of a proposed embargo on Russian coal imports and a ban on Russian ships mooring in EU ports.

According to diplomats, the Commission should specify, in particular, whether the ban should apply to existing coal contracts or only to new contracts.

According to the source, some countries, led by Germany, wanted to more clearly define the conditions under which the EU should permanently cut itself off from Russian coal supplies.

The meeting of the ambassadors will continue on Thursday.

The European Commission had previously offered a three-month time limit to withdraw from existing contracts, but diplomats instructed it to add additional details to the new proposal, which they should discuss on Thursday.

According to the diplomats, today especially the coastal countries have also raised questions about the ban on the mooring of Russian ships in EU ports. There was also a discussion about banning Russian companies from participating in public procurement in the EU. Countries agree on the rest of the package.

Recall that on April 6, the United States announced new sanctions against the Russian Federation, adding to the sanctions list the children of Vladimir Putin, the wife, and daughter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, members of the Security Council of the Russian Federation,

Sanctions have also been imposed against Sberbank and new investments in the Russian Federation by citizens and legal entities from the United States are prohibited, regardless of where they are located.

The UK also imposed sanctions against Sberbank and banned investments.
