Alert for the firing of missiles in Erbil, Iraq

Several missiles were fired at the area of ​​the US consulate in Erbil in northwestern Iraq on Saturday night, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw said multiple missiles had landed in the area, saying it was unclear whether the target was the US consulate or the city’s airport. According to the INA, five explosions were heard in the attack.

The Kurdistan Health Minister stated that no injuries or deaths were reported in the attack on Saturday night.

The videos shared on social networks, supposedly from the scene, showed multiple and large explosions in the area.

It is still unclear who fired the missiles. Iran has threatened in recent days to retaliate for the killing of two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officers in a suspected Israeli airstrike in Syria last week.

Nuclear Deal on hold

On March 4, diplomats declared that the pact was imminent, after months of tough negotiations. But the next day, Moscow, under a wave of sanctions from Western powers over the invasion of Ukraine, asked the United States for guarantees that these new measures would not affect its economic cooperation with Iran.

Claims that the head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, described as “out of place”, but that did not stop the discussions.

“We express our disappointment,” insisted the signatories of the statement. “We understand that Iran and the United States worked actively to resolve the latest bilateral issues and we are ready to close the deal now.”

“The agreement that is on the table to return to the JCPOA can and must be closed with the utmost urgency,” they add.
