Mighty Thor: Jane Foster’s story in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ will be very similar to the comics

Fans of Marvel and its cinematic universe can expect the story of Jane Foster becoming Mighty Thor to be very similar in Thor: Love and Thunder to what we’ve seen in the comics. It has been revealed by Taika Waititi, director and main screenwriter of the film.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Jane Foster first appeared in Marvel comics in 1962, in Journey into Mystery #84 as Thor’s love interest. But later on, in Thor: God of Thunder #25, she takes up Mjolnir to become the main hero. Much later, between 2014 and 2015, Foster had her story arc, giving rise to Mighty Thor, with Jason Aaron as a writer and Russell Dauterman as an artist.

Jane Foster becomes Mighty Thor following a Marvel event known as Original Sin, in which Odin’s son is no longer worthy of holding Mjolnir. During her transformation, she also has to go through a battle with cancer and work hand-in-hand with the Avengers.

Taika Waititi explained in an interview with Total Film that the idea is to stay very true to the original events of Jane Foster in the comics. “We got pretty close to Jane’s story arc and what happens to her. Since all of this has a lot of influence throughout the whole movie, we tried to take the best parts of the story from her.”

He also assures that, although fans believe that this is a way to pass the baton from Chris Hemsworth to Natale Portman, they should not expect that. “I suspect many will assume that, but while I don’t know Marvel’s plans, that’s not necessarily the case.”

Thor: Love and Thunder take place after the events of Thor: Ragnarok in which Asgard is destroyed. Then, the Grandmaster’s ship with all the survivors of the planet, on its way to Earth, is boarded by Thanos, killing half of the occupants. After the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor seems to be searching for his inner peace, meeting a new villain, Gorr, and reuniting with Jane Foster, who now has Mjolnir in her hands.
