Why Mouthwash Could Prevent Coronavirus

The mouth can act as a reservoir for the virus. Infected patients with poor oral health are more likely to become seriously ill, a recent study found

Ingesting Mouthwash Every Morning May Help Protect People Against COVID-19suggested a recent study. Researchers from the Egyptian Society of Cardiology in association with the American College of Cardiology found that, people with poor oral health were more likely to suffer severe symptoms if they contracted the SARS-CoV-2 virus in any of its variants.

This is the latest in a long list of studies that have linked poor oral hygiene to the risk of more complicated forms of the new coronavirus, prompting experts to insist that the public take better care of their teeth.

The scientists behind the research claimed that the mouth can act as a reservoir for the virus, which allows infected patients to have a high “viral load”, that is, particles that circulate through the body.

In general, the more viruses a person has in their body, the more likely they are to become seriously ill they warned.

It is the latest research to highlight mouthwash as a potential tool to help kill the pathogen. Typically, COVID-19 enters the throat or nose where it multiplies and makes its way through the respiratory system to the lungs. But some specialists have speculated that the virus can spread to the blood after infecting the gums of teeth.

Experts from the University of Cairo, Egypt, tested the theory in a group of 86 coronavirus patients who also suffered from heart disease. This is how the doctors evaluated their oral hygiene and the severity of the symptoms they manifested.

The results showed that patients with better oral hygiene had milder COVID-19 symptoms and less inflammation in their bodies. They also recovered faster, according to researchers who have not yet published their full findings.

One of the study authors, Dr. Ahmed Mustafa Basuoni, a cardiologist, said that Using mouthwash could help people avoid COVID-19 completely and have milder symptoms if they contract the virus.

He added that other good oral health habits, such as regular tooth brushing and frequent visits to the dentist, serve to prevent or lessen the severity of the coronavirus.

Basuoni specified: “Oral tissues could act as a reservoir for SARS-CoV-2, developing a high viral load in the oral cavity. Therefore, we recommend maintaining oral health and improving oral hygiene measures, especially during acute infection”.

The study was presented at a virtual meeting of the American College of Cardiology Middle East 2021. The researchers did not speculate why poor oral hygiene can lead to a more serious episode of the disease.

But dozens of studies have shown that people with good oral hygiene generally take better care of themselves and are generally healthier. For example, gum disease has been linked to a variety of conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes, which are known to leave patients more vulnerable to the coronavirus.

This latest study isn’t the first to find a claim that mouthwash could help people avoid a serious COVID-19 infection.

Experts believe that the substances found in mouthwash disrupt the fat, lipid membrane that surrounds the virus, inhibiting its ability to infect people. Last November, Cardiff University researchers found that mouthwashes containing ketipyridinium chloride killed the virus in 30 seconds.
