4 Things Your Hair Health Says About You

Ever woke up to a beautiful day only for it to be ruined the moment you look at your hair in the mirror? The horror of your hair health declining, your locks turning into brittle grass-like strands is unimaginable. And if you are like most people, your first instinct is to drown your hair in loads and loads of conditioner.

But when the problem is internal, it simply cannot be solved with external efforts. Much like the eyes are a gateway to a person’s soul, their hair is the gateway to a comprehensive insight into their health. To this end, today we will enlighten you about 5 pleas for help that your internal health makes via your hair.

Split ends

Considered an abrupt change in hair texture, split ends are the very first warning signs from your body that something is not quite right inside. And if you are going mad wondering why you have wiry, lank hair that’s full of split ends, then the most likely scenario is that you are severely dehydrated.

Water makes up 70% of your body, which includes every single one of your strands as well. And if you are not mindful of your daily water intake, it directly affects the hair health. So apart from parched lips, stiff hair and split ends are a very obvious sign that you need to increase your daily water intake.

Like hair health expert Caitlyn Perkins says, ”Think of your hair like a plant. If you give it all the right things, it will grow beautifully!”

Premature Greying of Hair

Greying and thinning hair – What used to be a part of aging gracefully is now a sign of disgrace. More and more people below even 25 years of age report graying of their strands early in their life. Why is that?

The answer is simple – Vitamin B12 Deficiency. Vitamin B12 is responsible for the richness of pigment in your hair and if its levels are too low in your body, then you can rest assured that it will affect your hair color soon.

So the very first step is to get tested for vitamin deficiency and incorporate foods like tuna, salmon, dairy products, walnuts and Vitamin B12 supplements in your diet

Hair Thinning – A Tell-tale sign of Thyroid

The thinning of hair could be due to various less serious reasons like dehydration, vitamin deficiencies, and a poor hair-care routine. But the possibility of your thyroid gland going amuck cannot be ignored.

Hypothyroidism is a condition when your thyroid gland stops producing the required amount of thyroid hormones – T3, T4, and TSH. It not only affects your weight, activity levels, and mental health but is also responsible for hair thinning. It can cause mild to severe shedding and lackluster hair.

So if you are putting on weight all of a sudden or have low energy levels, a TSH test might be on the cards. Medication for thyroid usually involves taking Thyroxine.

Weak Hair

If your hair strands are weak and brittle, then you can be sure to blame your poor diet. And if all you eat is ramen, burgers, and sodas, please don’t expect your hair to look shiny and gorgeous because it won’t.

For beautiful and bouncy hair and good overall health, make sure that you eat a healthy and balanced diet rich in iron, calcium, Vitamin B12, dairy products (if you are not allergic), and healthy fats like walnuts, almonds, and seeds.

Always remember – what you put on your plate is what your body puts in your hair.

Maintaining your hair health is a very tricky business, especially in today’s times when eating unhealthy is the norm. And many of the initial signs go unmissed because of our lack of attention to detail when it comes to our bodies. But if you make it a habit to pay close attention to your hair’s behavior, you can catch some of these common diseases in their early stages and prevent them from further worsening your health.

A writer by day and reader by night, I am someone who - as soon as she graduated from high school - knew she wanted to write. How? When? where? It did not matter as long as I got to write! And every second of it has been full of learning, adventure, and excitement. I love reading, especially high fantasy, fiction, and thrillers! And when I am not reading or reviewing books on my blog, I try my hand at graphic designing for blog posts, headers, logos. Add a little bit of video editing into the mix and I'm peachy!
