Ke Huy Quan Explains Why The Goonies 2 Hasn’t Happened

“I would really love to revisit the character of Data if there is an opportunity.”

Ke Huy Quan, star of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, has shared his thoughts on why a sequel to The Goonies hasn’t been made.

In light of his recent Golden Globe win for his performance in Daniel Kwan’s sci-fi thriller 2022, the actor disclosed that there have been attempts to develop a second Goonies picture during the past 30 years.

He remarked, “We had many scripts, but none of them felt like they could live up to what the original was” (via IndieWire).

“Unfortunately, our ship’s captain [director] Dick Donner passed away, and I truly do not know if there will be a Goonies 2, but I would really want to explore the character of Data if there is an opportunity.” Donner died at the age of 91 in July of 2021.
“That’s the movie I believed I’d need to make a career return,” he continued.

Quan’s career began with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and he went on to play Richard ‘Data’ Wang in the 1985 classic The Goonies, about a gang of kids who find a treasure map while trying to preserve their neighbourhood and end up on a journey to recover the fortune of pirate One-Eyed Willy.

Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton also made appearances in the film, in addition to Josh Brolin (who played a Marvel villain) and Sean Astin (who played a Hobbit).

Later, Quan took a long vacation from acting—nearly two decades, to be exact—before making her comeback in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, co-starring with Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu.

Last September at Disney’s D23 Expo, it was announced that he would be appearing in the upcoming season of the Disney+ series Loki.
