Hollywood halts Russian releases, including The Batman and Morbius

Warner Bros., The Walt Disney Co. and Sony Pictures all have major international releases scheduled for the coming weeks.

Warner Bros., stopped the release of “The Batman” (“Batman”) in Russia just days before its debut in theatres in that country after Hollywood decided to freeze distribution plans after Vladimir’s invasion of Ukraine Putin.

Warner Bros., The Walt Disney Co. and Sony Pictures said Monday that they would “pause” the release of their films in Russia. Each studio has major international releases scheduled for the coming weeks. “The Batman,” one of the year’s most anticipated movies, opens Friday in the United States and many overseas territories, including Russia.

“In light of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, WarnerMedia is pausing the release of its feature film ‘The Batman’ in Russia,” a spokesperson for the studio said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves. We look forward to a swift and peaceful resolution of this tragedy.”

Warner Bros.’s announcement comes shortly after The Walt Disney Co. made a similar decision on Monday. The studio planned to release Pixar’s “Turning Red” (“Red”) in Russia on March 10. That film will go directly to its Disney+ streaming service in the United States. Before Disney’s announcement, Warner Bros. was expected to proceed with the Russian release of “The Batman.”

“Given the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the tragic humanitarian crisis, we are pausing the release of films in Russia, including Pixar’s upcoming ‘Turning Red’,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. “ We will make future business decisions based on the evolution of the situation. In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging refugee crisis, we are working with our partner NGOs to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance to refugees.”

Hollywood changed its plans in Russia on Monday night, as global pressure mounts to sever business ties with the country over the war in Ukraine. Western economic sanctions sent the Russian ruble into a tailspin on Monday as numerous nations tried to block Russian banks. On Saturday, the Ukrainian Film Academy called for an international boycott of the Russian film industry.

Cinema condemns the facts

The Motion Picture Association of the United States said Monday that it “stands with the international community in upholding the rule of law and condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

“On behalf of our member companies, who are leaders in the film, television and streaming industry, we express our strongest support for the vibrant creative community in Ukraine who, like all people, deserve to live and work in peace,” the statement said. MPA in a statement.

Russia is not a leading market for Hollywood, but the country generally ranks in the top 12 globally for box office. Sony’s recent smash hit “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which grossed $1.85 billion at the global box office, earned $46.7 million in Russia. Sony’s most recent release, Tom Holland’s adventure “Uncharted” (“Uncharted: Off the Map”), has grossed some $20 million in Russia over the past two weeks.

After Disney and Warner Bros. made their announcements, Sony followed suit.

“Given the ongoing military action in Ukraine and the resulting uncertainty and humanitarian crisis unfolding in that region, we will pause our planned theatrical releases in Russia, including the upcoming release of ‘Morbius,’ ” Sony said in a statement. in reference to the “Spider-Man” spin-off movie scheduled for early April. “We think and pray for all those who have been affected and we hope that this crisis will be resolved quickly.”
