‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Bags Five Big Wins At The Critics Choice Awards 2023

Five awards, including best director, picture, original screenplay, supporting actor, and editing, went to the science fiction action adventure “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once,” which was directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and presented at the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

Variety, an American news agency, reports that A24’s “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once” has been nominated for 14 awards.

The directing pair was up against Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), Baz Luhrmann (“Elvis”), and James Cameron (“Avatar: The Way of Water”) in the best director category.

While accepting the award, Scheinert thanked:

“all the storytellers and filmmakers that inspired me to become a filmmaker – you’re in the same category as me. Ugh, that’s vile! Hello?! Nonetheless, you served as a source of motivation for me, and for that I am eternally grateful. And as noted in THR, your films have had a profound effect on my life.”

The film’s director, Kwan, acknowledged that his mother had been an influence on the character of Evelyn Wang, played by Michelle Yeoh. She was the first person who made me believe in my potential as a filmmaker. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kwan speculated that this mother may be the first Asian-American immigrant mother to encourage her kid to pursue a career in movies.

In accepting the award for best supporting actor, Ke Huy Quan praised his “entire EEAAO family” for their support.

The Hollywood Reporter stated that Paul Rogers was the film’s best editor, beating out Stephen Rivkin, David Brenner, John Refoua, James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century Studios), Eddie Hamilton’s “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount Pictures), and Monika Willi’s “Tar” (Focus Features).

A24 describes “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once” as a

“hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about a worn-out Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to do her taxes.”

The website Rotten Tomatoes has awarded the film a perfect score of 97 percent. Variety reports that A.O. Scott, film reviewer for the New York Times, gave the film a high review, calling it “messy and lovely.”

Actress Michelle Yeoh of Malaysia took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her work in “Everything, All at Once” last week.
