Hong Kong

Hong Kong was founded as a British Empire colony in 1842, following the Qing Empire’s abandonment of Hong Kong Island to Xin’an County at the conclusion of the First Opium War in 1841. The region was expanded to encompass Kowloon Peninsula during the Second Opium War in 1860, and the New Territories were leased for 99 years in 1898. Imperial Japan occupied British Hong Kong from 1941 to 1945, however the territory was restored to British authority following Japan’s defeat. China gained complete control of the territory in 1997. Hong Kong operates under the concept of “one nation, two systems,” with its own political and economic systems distinct from those of mainland China. This page includes a national calendar for the year 2022 that includes all public holidays. Statutory Holidays in Hong Kong in 2022

The Employment (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 will take effect on January 1, 2022. The first newly added statutory holiday is the Buddha’s Birthday, which comes on May 8, 2022. If the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival falls on a Sunday, the following day (i.e. the seventeenth day of the eighth lunar month) is designated as a statutory holiday in its stead by the Employment Ordinance. Due to the fact that the day following the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival in 2022 occurs on a Sunday, the 12th of September (Monday) will be designated as a statutory holiday. All employees are entitled to the aforementioned statutory holidays.
